Tension in Metropolis
The work is about the main character’s state of mind as she returns home on a weekday evening from Ikebukuro Station, one of the largest train stations in Tokyo.
A woman lives at the area that is relatively close to the city center. When she arrives at her station, she compares herself with those remaining in the car and gets off, feeling a small sense of superiority.
In Tokyo, the nearest station of one’s residence is a major symbol that represents the class and lifestyle. Therefore the name of the one’s nearest station is deeply rooted in the identity of the individual.
If the name of the nearest station is associated with class, it must be deeply rooted in the identity of the individual.
Just one different station can drastically change the image of life for those who live there. People may feel a sense of superiority or inferiority in response. As a person living in an overcrowded city myself, I felt that such a seemingly trivial issue has great importance, and I made this work about it.
